Enterprising people have even turned baby blankets into works of art. However, in crafting, as in any kind of artistry, many are called but few are chosen. There are mistakes that can be made in creating baby blankets. Most people think it’s fairly easy to stitch together something that little. If you take for instance, a basic blanket, say one that’s 36 inches square, it seems fairly easy to snip out the material and run up a few stitches.

However, there are many choices that the would-be blanket crafter has to make. One is that they might decide to go with the non-traditional type of baby blanket and pick a material is some wild colors. This is not necessarily a good choice to make. And while to the adult, the hard ridge doesn’t look like much, to a tiny baby, it can be quite difficult to lie on. Another mistake, well-intended though it was, involved attaching a very lacy edging to a baby’s blanket, and the edging that caused a problem was a beautiful filet style. However, baby’s little fingers and little toes kept getting hooked in the crocheted edging, and this caused some panic for the baby. If you want to be creative in creating baby blankets, stick to traditional colors, add maybe a tiny bit of accents here and there, stay away from lacy finger-catching trim, and if you are into making baby blankets at home, be absolutely positive that all pins and needles have been removed.

I, personally, like to take out the embroidery machine and play with it.  I buy a few fleece baby blankets and “personalize” them.  Sometimes I monogram them and sometimes I embroider the baby’s name and date of birth if the baby is already born, that is.  I have most of the Disney line of embroidery designs for my Brother SE-270D.  Some of the designs came built in so I don’t even need the card reader and memory card in order to make Disney embroidered baby blankets.  Actually, I have had a bunch of people call me to see if I would make personalized baby blankets for them.  I’ve been working on Christmas throws at the moment and that’s ok.  I’m picking up extra money for the holidays.  If you really get into it you can buy baby blankets wholesale and make some major money selling them.  Like I said, around the holidays people actually come to you, it’s not like you have to go scouting them out, but you can if you want.

Once you realize what the baby’s mom is into you have a place to start.  Baby blankets are meant to keep the baby warm and comfy for sure, but the gift is really for mom.  That baby isn’t going to know if it’s green or orange or purple or polka dot or whatever.  At least not until that baby is all grown and ready to have a baby of its own.  Then the memory box will come out and the process will start all over again.  By then baby blankets might not even be necessary!  Maybe scientists will figure out a way to keep body temperature at 98.6 all the time no matter what the room or atmospheric temperature is.  But that’s something for late night sci fi reading.  For now, I guess you’ll just have to figure out which baby blankets mommy will like.

It is always a good idea to have several baby blankets around.  For colder winter months baby will need a nice thick quilt for warmth while in the summer you may only need a thin covering to give baby a sense of security at bedtime.  Baby security blankets are more important than you think.  There is a whole big world out there and sometimes baby just needs the safety of being wrapped in its own little cocoon.  Of course you can always stay up all night rocking him but that might not go over so well with daddy.

So yes, baby blankets are useful.  They keep babies warm and secure.  But they are also fashionable and trendy.  Like I said earlier, with so many to choose from you may be shopping for a while.  Just make sure the child isn’t in high school before you decide!

Every baby should have his or her very own special baby blanket.  You know, there is a certain “psychology” behind it.  We all have our little “crutches” that get us through day to day traumas and they are often referred to as our “security blankets.”  How much more a tiny infant needs that extra added security.  Think about it.  That child recently left the warmth and safety of his/her mother’s womb and is thrust out into a chaotic world with a cacophony of sights and sounds.  The reassurance of a blanket that stays with him/her day and night replicates the safety of the womb.

So you see, a handmade baby blanket is so much more than a personalized gift for baby.  Over time baby develops a sort of friendship with his blankie.  When the child starts going to day care while mommy works his blanket goes with him.  It feels and smells (and is some cases tastes) like home.  For mom and dad it is just one more sign of how special their little one is.  That blanket was handmade especially for their baby and everyone knows their baby is the best baby in town.  If it were any other way there’s something terribly wrong with those parents.  Each and every baby is a unique and special gift from above and deserves to have his or her very own baby blanket.
